Market Update

As more residents set up their own communal waste management centers — so-called “trash banks” — the city administration plans to lend a hand by constructing “trash centers” in each municipality.
Jakarta Sanitation Agency head Eko Bharuna said the administration had earmarked up to Rp 400 million (US$44,800) to set up and run one trash center in each municipality. There are five municipalities and one regency in Jakarta. There are 94 trash banks set up by local communities, mostly in Central and East Jakarta. If each subdistrict had its own waste banks, there would be 267 facilities in 267 subdistricts.

According to Jakarta Sanitation Agency head Eko Bharuna, a resident-initiated waste management program could help reduce the amount of trash by up to 60 tons per year. Jakarta produces around 6,000 tons of solid waste a day, 4,500 tons of which is dumped into the 110-hectare Bantar Gebang landfill in Bekasi.

Jakarta Sanitary Agency head Eko Baruna said Friday that according to the 2030 spatial plan, the total capacity of the four locations would be 10,000 tons of garbage per day. Currently, the city produces around 6,500 tons per day. “We predict this figure will grow to more than 9,000 tons per day in 2030, an increase of around 5 percent per year,” he said Friday.
Eko said the 98-hectare Ciangir site, with a capacity to house 3,000 tons per day, would serve the city’s western areas, while Bantar Gebang, which would have it’s capacity reduced to 3,000 tons, would serve the eastern areas.

The landfill sites in Cakung Cilincing and Sunter in North Jakarta are to be expanded to cater for 1,000 tons of garbage per day, while the other location in the Marunda Special Economic Zone — also in North Jakarta — which is still to be constructed, is expected to take in up to 2,000 tons of garbage per day.
